With UPI scams on the rise, securing your money is critical. Learn about VPA verification, chargebacks, and safe payment gateways.

The Digital Wild West: Protecting Your Money
UPI transactions in India cross billions every month. But ease of use brings ease of fraud.Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, moving from "lucky draw" scams to complex social engineering. In 2026, AI Voice Cloning is the new threat. Here is how to stay safe.
The Golden Rules of Survival
1. The "Scanner" Scam(Classifieds Special)
Scenario: You are selling an old sofa on OLX. A "buyer" calls and says he will pay via UPI. He sends a QR code and says "Scan this to receive payment".
The Rule: PIN is for GIVING, not RECEIVING.
You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If a screen asks for your PIN, money will leave your account.Block the number immediately.
2. The "Customs Officer" Call
Scenario: You receive a call (often automated) saying "FedEx/BlueDart has detained a parcel in your name containing illegal items(drugs / passports)". They transfer you to a "Police Officer" who demands money via Skype/WhatsApp video call to avoid arrest.
The Rule: Legit Police never conduct investigations via Skype Video Call. This is "Digital Arrest" fraud. Hang up.
3. Check the URL(Phishing)
Phishing sites imitate Amazon perfectly.
Check: amaz0n-big-sale.com is NOT amazon.in .
Warning: Be skeptical of "Free Gift" links on WhatsApp. If it sounds too good (iPhone for ₹2000), it is 100% a scam designed to steal your login credentials.
4. Credit Cards = Insurance
For high - value purchases(Laptops / TVs) on new websites, always use a Credit Card.
Why: Credit Cards offer "Chargeback" protection. If the seller sends a brick instead of a phone and refuses a refund, you can call your bank and dispute the transaction. The bank acts as a judge and often refunds you. UPI payments are instant and irreversible.
5. Transaction Limits & UPI Lite
Safety Setting: Go to your banking app and set a daily transaction limit (e.g., ₹20,000). If your phone is stolen, the thief can't empty your life savings.
Use UPI Lite: For small payments (tea, auto), use UPI Lite. It keeps your main bank statement clean and works without a PIN (up to ₹500), but limits exposure to a small wallet balance.
Stay safe and shop smart .
